Good health starts with a healthy mouth. And proper care does not stop with brushing your teeth; A clean tongue is also very important. That is why a tongue scraper is a tool that you should put directly on your shopping list if you want to feel better.
Because your oral health and therefore your tongue are linked to your health, you can recognize a lot of possible ailments by the structure and color of your tongue. We provide an overview.
- Yellow tongue
If your tongue is yellow in color, it probably means that you have bad breath; maybe you already noticed it by a bad taste in your mouth. You can often solve this problem by using a tongue scraper a number of times. Does this not help? Then it is best to pay a visit to the doctor. Do you not only have a yellow haze but also a thicker "stick" on your tongue? This may indicate a candida infection caused by a fungus in the mouth that almost everyone has. This fungus is activated when the composition of bacteria in the mouth is disturbed.
- White layer
A white color can indicate various problems, which are fortunately not serious. For example, a white-out tongue can be caused by different types of medication, but it can also indicate a reduced resistance. If it improves again, you will see that the white haze disappears too. Do you smoke and do you not brush your teeth carefully every day? Then you probably also have to deal with such a white layer, which for some may even be permanent.
- Purple tongue
A purple tint is associated with poor health; for example, you may experience problems if you are deficient in vitamin B2. But it can also indicate a lung condition. Does it last more than a day and you doubt where that unusual tongue color comes from? Then call the doctor.
- Smooth tongue
If you feel good, with a healthy tongue you will notice that there are some subtle bumps. You will notice this especially when you have had little to drink and your tongue has dried out a bit. If it feels completely smooth, you may have anemia or gluten intolerance. In addition, it can also be a sign of Sjögren's syndrome, a rheumatic disorder.
- Hair tongue
A hair tongue sounds a bit dirty, but it is something that happens a lot. It is a kind of brown-black or white vegetation on the back of your tongue that is caused by a disturbance of the balance between the wear and tear of new cells. It is an innocent condition. Smokers, coffee and tea drinkers in particular, who do not brush their teeth often or well enough, may be affected. Reduced saliva production or the use of antibiotics can also be a cause.
