People who keep their children's milk teeth often do this only as a memento for later. It is of course also very nice to have your own baby teeth in your hands later as an adult. Yet storing baby teeth is good for something else. You can save lives with it.
The teeth are full of so-called stem cells.
Stem cells are very important cells that can change into all kinds of other cells. A stem cell can therefore become a bone cell, fat cell and nerve cell. Stem cells are used to treat leukemia, other forms of cancer and blood disorders, among other things. In addition, they can also contribute to repairing damage to your muscles and nerves and even heart tissue can be repaired after a heart attack.
It is not possible to store teeth in a box on the shelf if you want the stem cells to remain usable. What you have to do is freeze the tooth quickly. This must be done within 48 hours. That way you know for sure that the stem cells remain intact. Especially in America, baby teeth are stored en masse. It is also possible here in the Netherlands, but there are costs involved. But then it applies: whoever saves what also has something!
