Summary - Oral diseases, dental and facial surgery
Although extensive oral surgery is usually performed by the surgeon, simpler procedures are also performed in dental practice; for example extracting teeth. The dentist also has an important function in screening for oral diseases. Because most people regularly visit the dentist for periodic oral examinations, oral diseases are often discovered at an early stage. In the Netherlands, about 550 people are diagnosed with oral cancer every year. Various surgical procedures are discussed as well as the most common oral diseases.
