The research done by the University of Pennsylvania was conducted in China. Here 500 children between 9 and 11 years old took an IQ test. In addition, both children and parents were asked how often the children ate fish per week. They were also asked about the sleeping patterns of the children. How many hours they slept on average each night? How often they wake up at night?
After the results of the IQ test were received, it was found that children who ate fish once or more often a week scored an average of 4.8 points higher than children who ate less or no fish. It also appeared that children who did eat fish regularly slept better and more.
The effect of prostaglandins
The reason that children who eat fish sleep better is probably due to the fact that oily fish, such as sardines, herring and salmon, cause more prostaglandins in the body. This is due to the Omega-3 fats that are so healthy for people.
After doing this research, scientists advise parents to let their children eat fatty fish at least once a week. It is wise to start with this when the children are small, so that they get used to the taste quickly.
However, not all fish are good for children’s health. Predator fish such as tuna, swordfish and king mackerel eat other fish, so there is much more mercury in these fish. This is not good for people’s health.
