People who are looking for a tasty snack without too many calories often end up with popcorn. But is popcorn really healthy? And does it still matter if you eat sweet or salty popcorn? I’ll explain it to you!
That popcorn is healthier than chips is one thing that is certain. Popcorn is rich in antioxidants and polyphenols and it is also a good source of vitamins B1, B2 and iron. But, beware: not all popcorn is healthy.
Is popcorn healthy?
If you eat popcorn without additives, it only contains one single ingredient – corn. When the corn kernel is heated, steam is created on the inside because the water in the grain evaporates. Due to the pressure the skin bursts open and popcorn is formed. If your popcorn is prepared this way and you do not add salt or sugar to it, it is certainly a healthy snack. Unfortunately, there are few popcorn brands in the supermarket without additives for sale, so if you want to snack healthy, it’s best to make popcorn yourself.
Popcorn from the supermarket
Do you often get your popcorn at the supermarket and have you thought that you were healthy all the time? Then we unfortunately have to disappoint you. Ready-made popcorn from the supermarket is often baked in artificially cured fats, also called trans fats. These fats are anything but healthy and therefore not good for the line. In addition, all kinds of flavors are often added to popcorn: from salt and sugar to chocolate and caramel. As a result, popcorn often contains unnecessary calories.
Sweet or salty?
If you nevertheless want to go for popcorn from the supermarket, then you can choose the best for salt popcorn in terms of calories. Salty popcorn generally contains fewer calories than sweet popcorn. One bowl of 40 gram salty popcorn contains 151 calories, while sweet popcorn often contains at least 200 calories. Do you go for salty popcorn? Snack or in moderation. Too much salt is also not good for you. The maximum recommended amount of salt per day is six grams, so try not to exceed this limit.
Make popcorn by yourself
For now, making popcorn yourself is the best option if you want to eat healthily. And luckily this is not that difficult at all. Throw a handful of corn kernels into a heated pan (200 ° C) and ensure that the bottom is completely covered. Then place a lid on the pan, but make sure that the steam can escape. You can use a little bit of oil to conduct the heat and avoid burning. Have you not heard a “flop” for two or three seconds? Then the popcorn is ready!
