As an assistant in a general practice, public pharmacy or dental practice you will have to deal with people with mental health problems (mental disorders or psychiatric disorders). In this book we use these terms interchangeably. Almost half of people go through one or more periods in their lives with a mental health problem: an anxiety disorder, depressive or psychotic disorder or addiction. Some of those people suffer from a chronic disorder. This also includes developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorders, ADHD and personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder.
The condition will not always require a specific approach or approach from the assistant. Some disorders or situations require that. That is why knowledge of some psychiatric illnesses is important.
