Some patients have difficulty understanding information, not only written information, but also in a conversation. This can occur in people who can not read and write well, migrants, people with intellectual disabilities or brain injuries and dementia sufferers. People with a psychiatric disorder and people under the influence of alcohol or drugs also do not always understand information properly.

If understanding requires extra attention

Some patients have difficulty understanding information, not only written information, but also in a conversation. This can occur in people who can not read and write well, migrants, people with intellectual disabilities or brain injuries and dementia sufferers. People with a psychiatric disorder and people under the influence of alcohol or drugs also do not always understand information properly.

For all patients, you can use the tell-show feel-do method to transfer information (see box).

Tell-show-feel-do method

This information model is mainly known in the dental practice. This concerns the following actions:

  • Tell: explain what is going to happen, what you are going to do.
  • Show: show what will happen. You show an object or instrument and do the action on the patient or on a model.
  • Let feel: let the objects and actions feel, for example on a nail or skin.
  • Perform the operation (examination or treatment). Sometimes you let the patient perform an exercise and practice, for example brushing your teeth.

For people who have difficulty understanding, you will focus on every part of the tell-show feel-do method.
