Like all nuts, walnuts contain iron, vitamin E and vitamin B1. Nuts contain a lot of unsaturated fat. Eating unsalted nuts protects against certain cardiovascular diseases and lowers the LDL cholesterol that is not good for the blood vessels. Because of these positive effects, all unsalted nuts - including Brazil nuts, almonds and cashews for example - are in the disk of Five.

 

Walnuts extra healthy?

The composition of the nutrients is slightly different for all nuts, so you can't say that one nut is better or healthier for us than the other. Precisely because one species contains a little more iron and the other vitamin E, it is good to vary with eating nuts.

 

Within this group, walnuts contain a relatively large amount of alpha linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is a vegetable omega 3 fatty acid and an essential fatty acid. That means that the body cannot make this itself and you have to get this fatty acid through the diet. Omega 3 fatty acids protect against cardiovascular disease. ALA is also found in linseed oil, rapeseed oil, soybean oil and vegetable (diet) margarines. Meat and green leafy vegetables contain small amounts of this vegetable omega-3 fatty acid.

 

Walnuts and cancer

It is sometimes claimed that eating walnuts reduces the risk of cancer, but - so far - no convincing evidence has been found.

 

What is the advice?

Most adults are advised to eat a handful of unsalted nuts every day. All unsalted nuts count, it does not matter whether they are unroasted, roasted or roasted. Also nut paste and peanut butter made from one hundred percent nuts or one hundred percent peanut count.
