Quick, easy and delicious: you can easily make a smoothie and work it inwards. But how healthy is such a fruit shake actually? The Nutrition Center gives the following advice …
To get straight to the point: smoothies are not in the disk of Five and do not count towards your daily portion of fruit, according to the nutrition center. The center recommends eating loose fruit instead of smoothies. Seven questions and answers about smoothies.
Are they healthy?
Smoothies are less likely to fill up than loose fruit, they often contain a lot of sugar and it is not certain that the health effects of these types of shakes are the same as those of loose fruit. Insufficient research has been done into the health effects of pureed fruit. All in all, it is not clear whether smoothies are just as good for you as fresh fruit.
Are all the vitamins you need in a smoothie?
A freshly prepared fresh fruit smoothie contains more vitamins, minerals and fiber than when you buy a ready-made fruit shake in the store. But that is still less than, for example, a whole orange or banana. This is because the structure of the fruit breaks in the blender. As a result, less of the nutritional value is preserved.
How much sugar is in smoothies?
A glass of fruit smoothie of 250 milliliters soon contains seven sugar cubes. If you drink fruit smoothies, you will get a lot of sugar – and therefore calories – unnoticed.
What is healthier: ready-made or made yourself?
Ready-made smoothies from the store often contain fewer nutrients and fiber and extra added sugar. Making your own smoothies is therefore usually healthier.
What saturates better: a piece of fruit or a smoothie?
Pureed fruit is less satiating than a loose piece of fruit. You are therefore less likely to become full of it. Certainly if you drink a smoothie, it does not feel saturated. This is because you don’t have to chew and you “drink away” a smoothie faster than if you were to eat the same amount of fruit. It is therefore better to eat a piece of fruit than to drink a shake. Tip: would you rather make a smoothie? Then grab a spoon.
What about vegetable smoothies?
The same applies to vegetables: you can eat them better than drink them. Because pureed vegetables are also less likely to fill you up. Moreover, if a ready-made vegetable smoothie contains a lot of sugar, you will get a lot of calories unnoticed. If you make a vegetable smoothie yourself, at least grab a spoon. This ensures that you become saturated faster than if you drink it.
Is it good for the elderly and people with malnutrition?
Smoothies are an easy way to get nutrients for people who are struggling to eat enough. For example, dairy smoothies can be good for elderly people who have difficulty eating and people with malnutrition.
