You may not think about it every day, but it is very important to keep your mouth clean and healthy. But every time the dental hygienist tells you that you have not done your best well enough. How do you keep your mouth clean?
These are ten tips to keep your mouth healthy.
1. Take care of your gums
The older we get, the more we get from receding gums. Receding gums are very annoying, since it can cause the nerves to be exposed, which can cause a lot of pain. To prevent this, you can go over your gums with a circular brush with a toothbrush.
2. Do not drink fruit tea and prosecco
Soft drinks are not good for your teeth at all, but this also applies to other unexpected drinks. Fruit tea can also be very dangerous for your teeth because the acid levels in lemon, raspberry and blackcurrant tea affect the enamel. Therefore always rinse your mouth with water after drinking such a drink.
You may hate it, but it is really very important to floss regularly. It doesn't matter how well you brush your teeth, with only a toothbrush you can't get through your teeth properly. So flossing is really very necessary.
If you take certain medication, always check the package leaflet carefully to see if the medication can cause a dry mouth. Some medicines dry out the mucous membranes – and therefore also the oral cavity -, after which there is little saliva in the mouth. Saliva protect the teeth, so a shortage is not advisable. Do you take such medication? Then ask your dentist for advice.
5. Chewing gum with xylitol
Although chewing gum is not good for those who have over-developed jaw muscles, it is very good for your teeth. By chewing you stimulate the production of saliva, which in turn protects your mouth against acids.
6. Less with snacks
If you are snacking all day or eating on lollipops or pickles, then you should not do that anymore. All the sugar in the snacks ensures that the tooth enamel on your teeth is constantly attacked and that there is not enough time in between to be able to adequately protect your teeth.
7. Drink with a straw
If you drink drinks that can affect your tooth enamel, try to do this with a straw as much as possible. Anyway with drinks with coloring, but preferably also with carbonic acid. This way you ensure that the dye does not stick to your teeth and your teeth discolor.
8. Electric toothbrush
Even though you are doing your best with your regular toothbrush and you are brushing for at least two minutes, you will not achieve as much with an ordinary toothbrush as with an electric toothbrush. The latter brushes easier and is better for your teeth and gums.
We get it: it's not nice to pay a visit to the dentist. What he or she is going to do is often not fun, but very necessary. Regular visits to the dentist can prevent minor inconveniences from turning into major problems. Go to the dentist at least once, but preferably twice a year, especially if you often have problems.
10. Do not rinse after brushing
You often rinse your teeth after brushing to get a clean feeling. This is only a shame, because rinsing also removes the fluoride in your toothpaste. This fluoride ensures that your teeth are protected, so don't do it anymore!
