Everyone is familiar with the hard butter that cannot be spread on your sandwich. Or that frozen jar of Nutella or peanut butter – just as annoying. You wonder why people put these things in the fridge, because they don’t belong there at all. There are more things that don’t belong in the fridge:
Although butter contains pasteurized milk, you can certainly keep it on the counter for a few days. Salted butter can be stored for longer, as it has less chance of contamination. Put the butter in an airtight container, go in with a clean knife and you will see that it stays good for a long time.
Melons that are still in their skins and that have not yet been cut into pieces are better stored outside the fridge. This way they can mature better. Honey melon is the only melon that you can keep in the fridge.
Just like melons, tomatoes can ripen better at room temperature. If they become too soft you can of course always put them in the fridge. Or eat immediately, that is of course also possible. 🙂
If you cool potatoes, the starch in the potatoes turns into sugar, giving you a grainy texture and a sweet taste. It is therefore best to keep them in a paper bag or in a dark, cool place.
Onions do not belong in the fridge at all. You can optionally (briefly) save a sliced onion. But if the onions are still in the skin, simply keep them in a dark place.
If you put bread in the fridge it doesn’t taste nearly as good as fresh bread. You better keep it in the freezer and then roast if you need it. Store your bread in a bread bin and you can enjoy it for a long time.
If you store honey in the fridge, it will crystallize. This doesn’t look so good and you don’t want to put it on your sandwich afterwards. Always keep honey outside the fridge.
8. Fresh coffee
Freshly ground beans can absorb the smell of other food in the fridge. Keep this bag in the pantry for up to two weeks or in the freezer if you store it in the long term.
Basil belongs at home on the counter and not in the fridge. If you do this it will absorb the other odors of food. Water the basil plant regularly and it will last for a long time.
