You like it or you don’t like it; Cranberries are known for their sour and somewhat bitter taste. That is why they are not at the top of everyone’s favorite fruit list. Yet these berries, which are harvested in the fall, are very good for you.
And for these five very good reasons.
1. Good for your heart
In addition to the fact that cranberries are good for your blood pressure, the sour berries in liquid form also help to lower cholesterol. If you drink a glass of pure cranberry juice every day, it lowers your cholesterol levels and heart and vascular diseases are less likely to occur.
Not only the flesh of the berry contains healthy qualities, the skin also gives your immune system a big boost. It contains the substance ursolic acid. This occurs in the peel of many fruits and has a strong anti-inflammatory effect on our body. So you know where to take a sip if you have a flu.
3. High in antioxidants
A word that we now know all too well and that occurs in many fruit and cereal types is antioxidants. Antioxidants serve the purpose of protecting us as a kind of shield against harmful substances and thus preventing long-term diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. So from now on, just throw a handful of berries through your yogurt.
4. Preventing cystitis
When you contract cystitis for the first time in your life, you will probably hear from your mother that you can combat this by drinking (liters of) cranberry juice. This is not only due to the acidity of cranberries, but also to the phyto-nutrients contained in the red berries. These nutrients ensure that the E.coli bacterium, which causes cystitis, cannot adhere to the inside of your bladder and urinary tract.
5. Good for your teeth
Researchers in Canada and Japan have investigated the effect of cranberries on tooth decay and gums. What seems? The sour berry seems to prevent the adhesion of bacteria that make our teeth sick. Would toothpaste with cranberry extract already exist?
